FLORENCE, S.C. (WBTW) -- Florence officials are working to contain and clean up an estimated 5,000 gallons of sewage that overflowed from a pair of manholes after recent heavy rains, the city said in a news release.

Officials said the wastewater overflow came from a manhole near 3300 W. Palmetto Street and a one near 528 Woody Jones Blvd., both of which are adjacent to the Florence Trail System. The overflow was caused by "excessive rainfall over the weekend and by the inflow and infiltration of stormwater into the system," the city said.

Once the overflow is fully contained, the city said crews will begin mitigation efforts, including water quality testing, vacuum truck cleanup, and disinfection of the affected areas in accordance with DES guidelines.
