Police and other services are asking Port Colborne residents and people living near a landfill in Welland, Ont. to keep windows closed as fire crews work to extinguish a “significant” fire.

The fire is located at the Humberstone Landfill. Niagara police said in a social media post earlier today that businesses along Humberstone Road and Townline Tunnel Road from Feeder to Canal Banks roads should close windows and avoid using their air conditioners “due to smoky conditions.”

“The affected area could expand depending on wind speed and direction. There are no Hazardous Materials involved in this incident. Operations are expected to continue throughout the day,” police said in a social media post on Tuesday.
