In a disturbing development in the Durgapur gang-rape case, West Bengal Police have arrested a sixth suspect—a classmate of the 23-year-old medical student survivor.

The arrest follows the survivor’s statement before a magistrate, alleging that her classmate “tried to force himself on her” the night of the attack.

The survivor, a second-year student from Jaleswar, Odisha, was allegedly gang-raped near her medical college after going out for dinner with a friend. She recounted being chased into a forest, assaulted, and threatened by a group of men who forced her to call her friend and warned her against screaming.
