DAYTON, Ohio —

A 5-year-old girl has died after police say she and her father were hit by gunfire while sitting in a car in Dayton.

It all unfolded Friday around 9:30 p.m. when Dayton Police said officers responded to the 3000 block of Nicholas Road on the report of a shooting.

When they got to the scene, they found a 5-year-old girl and 27-year-old man with gunshot wounds.

Police said the father and daughter were both sitting inside a vehicle when it was hit by "numerous rounds of gunfire."

Both were taken to the hospital where the 5-year-old girl died from her injuries. She has been identified as 5-year-old Legaci Taylor.

The father's injuries were non-life-threatening.

The incident remains under investigation
