Concerns from residents and conservation advocates over the demolition of Gananoque’s former Thousand Islands Railway Bridge have prompted a closer look at the project’s environmental impact, particularly its potential effect on local turtle populations.
Earlier this month, the Think Turtle Conservation Initiative raised alarms about the bridge removal, citing the presence of several at-risk species, including snapping turtles, northern map turtles, and painted turtles, which inhabit the stretch of the Gananoque River beneath the bridge.
