Terry Smith’s job title on Saturday was associate Penn State head coach.

He also oversaw the development of the Nittany Lions’ cornerbacks and was heavily involved in the program’s recruiting.

By Sunday afternoon, Smith had a new title. Smith will be doing a little bit of everything for PSU football.

Penn State fired James Franklin Sunday after the Lions lost their third consecutive game, a 22-21 Big Ten defeat to three-touchdown underdog Northwestern on Saturday at Beaver Stadium.

PSU athletic director Pat Kraft selected Smith, a Lions assistant since 2014, to be the team’s interim head coach for the remainder of the regular season.

Kraft and Smith both held Monday news conferences in State College ahead of Penn State’s Big Ten road date with Iowa on Saturday night.
