PORTLAND, Maine — Maine Beer Company co-founder Dan Kleban announced Tuesday that he was suspending his campaign for U.S. Senate and "enthusiastically" endorsing Gov. Janet Mills the same day she made her run official.

Kleban, a Democrat, said he was inspired to enter the race because of rising costs, attacks on Medicaid, and what he called a lack of accountability among political leaders, including Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine.

Kleban, 47, co-founded the Freeport-based brewery with his brother after losing his job during the Great Recession. He said their company built its reputation on paying a living wage, covering full health care costs for employees, providing retirement benefits and donating 1 percent of sales to nonprofits focused on climate change and conservation.
