RALEIGH, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- North Carolina Republicans want to redraw the state’s congressional map to add another GOP seat.
GOP leaders argued Monday that they are responding to similar efforts by Democrats in California, which came after Texas Republicans redrew their maps.
In a news release, Senate Pro Tem Phil Berger and House Speaker Destin Hall said they were answering a call from President Trump. The expectation is that the GOP will carve up North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District in the Eastern part of the state. The seat, currently held by Democrat Don Davis, has been the most competitive in recent years.
“If some of those lines were reshaped, it could quickly become a much more competitive Republican-leaning state,” Catawba College profession Michael Bitzer said.
