A Supreme Court jury has begun deliberating the fate of Robert Belbin.
The 24-year-old St. John’s man is charged with second-degree murder in the stabbing death of 22-year-old Seamus Secord.
The two were good friends but a dispute over $30,000 worth of missing drugs — specifically 3,000 Dilaudid pills — saw it all end in tragedy.
There’s no dispute that Belbin killed Secord on Mayor Avenue in February 2023; the question is whether it was intentional or self-defence to save his own life.
The jury could also find Belbin guilty of manslaughter, if they determine he did not mean to kill Secord in the course of the crime.
Justice Trina Simms is overseeing the trial, Paul Thistle and Mark James argued for the Crown, while Jason Edwards and Ben Curties are representing Belbin.
