Provincial police laid nearly 1,700 charges across Eastern Ontario during a Thanksgiving weekend safety blitz.
Those are the initial results of Operation Impact, carried out on the roads and highways patrolled by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in its East Region.
Operation Impact is a national education and enforcement campaign, targeting impaired, aggressive and distracted driving, as well as ensuring the use of seatbelts and child car seats.
“These are the main causes of death and injury on Canadian roadways,” police added Tuesday.
The initiative began Friday and wrapped up on Monday, involving officers from all East Region OPP detachments and traffic units between Quinte West and Quebec, as well as throughout the Ottawa Valley.
