SOLDIER, Iowa (KITV) — After 115 years of standing as a symbol of this small Iowa community, Soldier’s old water tower was removed Tuesday morning, marking the end of an era for longtime residents who considered it an iconic landmark.
The removal began at 6 a.m. Tuesday, with heavy machinery working to dismantle the structure that had served as a welcoming beacon for generations of visitors and residents alike.
“It was like one of our iconic landmarks,” said Denise Christiansen, a longtime resident who lived just a few hundred feet from the tower. “When you come in from Dunlap that way, or come around the corner from Moorhead, you always knew you were in Soldier because the first thing you see was the water tower.”
