JEFFERSON, Ohio (WOIO) - The City of Jefferson is holding a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the state of the fire department after 11 firefighters resigned.
At last week’s city council meeting, Jefferson firefighters took a stand. Eleven volunteer members of the department suddenly handed in their resignation letters to the mayor and city council on Monday.
Jake Rice, one of the firefighters who resigned and a spokesperson at the meeting, says a combined total of 133 years of service just walked off the job.
“I hope you fully understand and realize what you are losing,” said Rice.
Rice says the problems began last week when Dave Locy was promoted to fire chief after the previous chief retired.
He says once Locy took the job, he immediately asked for the resignation of three captains.
