A New Bedford woman has died of injuries sustained when she was trapped on the third floor during a fire last week, authorities announced Tuesday.

“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones who are mourning today,” said New Bedford Fire Chief Brian Medeiros. “This is a terrible loss for them and our city.”

Just after 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, local firefighters responded to reports of fire at a multi-family home at 396-398 Elm Street, the state Department of Fire Service stated. On the way, emergency responders were told residents were trapped on the second and third floors of the home.

At the scene, the firefighters saw fire on the second floor and “heavy smoke” on both upper floors, the department said, and entered the burning structure.
