A woman in her 70s died after becoming trapped on the third floor of burning house in New Bedford.

On Oct. 9, there fire was at 396-398 Elm Street in New Bedford around 8:30 p.m. First responders learned on the way there that residents were trapped on the second and third floors of the multi-family home.

Once at the house, firefighters saw fire coming from the second floor and heavy smoke coming from the second and third floors. They immediately made entry through a stairwell. They found one person, the woman in her 70s, and rescued her from the third floor.

She was taken by New Bedford EMS to a nearby hospital. The woman, who was in critical condition, was later transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where she died.

Officials have not released the woman’s name.
