The equity benchmark indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty closed lower on Tuesday (October 14) after failing to sustain early gains, as volatility dominated the session.

The Nifty fluctuated sharply during the day, crossing 25,300 on the upside and 25,100 on the downside before settling 82 points lower at 25,146. The Sensex declined 297 points to close at 82,030, while the Bank Nifty slipped 129 points to 56,496.

Market breadth remained weak, dragged down by broad-based selling in midcaps. The Nifty Midcap index fell nearly 1% or 438 points to 58,324, underperforming the benchmarks. The advance-decline ratio on the NSE stood at 1:3, reflecting the broader weakness.
