California Gov. Gavin Newsom has vetoed a bill that would have banned “forever chemicals” in cookware and other products.

Newsom announced the veto of Senate Bill 682 on Monday.

The big picture: SB 682 would have banned the sale of a cleaning product, dental floss, juvenile product, food packaging or ski wax that contains intentionally added per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, known as PFAS. That ban will begin in 2028. • The bill also bans the sale of cookware that contains intentionally added PFAS, starting in 2030. • Sen. Benjamin Allen (D–Santa Monica) authored the bill.

Why it matters: Forever chemicals have been used in a number of different products, including nonstick pans, since the 1940s. • The Environmental Protection Agency states that PFAS can be present in drinking
