Central Valley veterans received a surprise at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday.

House Speaker Mike Johnson addressed the Central Valley Honor Flight during their visit to Washington D.C.

The big picture: Despite the ongoing government shutdown closing all normal Capitol tours, Rep. Vince Fong (R–Bakersfield) personally led a tour of the Capitol, including the House Floor, for the veterans. • Nexstar reported that Johnson came out on the House Floor during the tour to thank the veterans for their service. The veterans reportedly gave Johnson a standing ovation that lasted several minutes when he walked in. • After thanking the veterans, Johnson spoke for around 20 minutes and gave the history of the design of the chambers.
