LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — For many Arkansas hunters, this weekend means one thing — a chance to head back into the woods.

The alternative firearms season, introduced just last year, was created in response to hunter feedback, giving people more legal options in the field.

“Now you can use an additional suite of firearms — straight-wall cartridges, rifles that use straight-wall cartridge ammunition,” Trey Reid, assistant chief of communications for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, said.

In addition to muzzleloaders, hunters participating in the alternative firearms hunt will be able to use non-semi-automatic rifles that fire straight-wall centerfire cartridges.
