After Chappell Roan condemned Immigration and Customs Enforcement at a recent show in Los Angeles, government officials are pushing back.
The "Pink Pony Club" singer declared "(expletive) ICE" onstage during an Oct. 10 concert in Pasadena, California, while discussing her admiration for the city of LA. Footage of the moment was shared widely on TikTok.
Now, the Department of Homeland Security has some words for the 27-year-old. Tricia McLaughlin, DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs, told TMZ on Oct. 11, "Pink Pony Club is good. Pedophiles are bad. That's who we’re getting off of our streets. Get a grip."
USA TODAY reached out to DHS and Roan's representatives for comment.
The Grammy-winning artist completed two nights at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on Oct. 10 and 11 as part of her Visions of Damsels & Other Dangerous Things pop-up shows, which kicked off in Queens, New York, last month.
At the Oct. 10 show, the Missouri native called LA her favorite city in the world. She applauded the community for coming together after wildfires devastated parts of the county in January.
"I just appreciate the city I lived in, Altadena, which is close, and seeing the fires — I'm not gonna be eloquent about this — I loved LA more than ever. When I saw how the community came together in Altadena to help, same with the Palisades, I just realized that I'm so lucky to be able to live here and to play here, and the city has taken care of me, and it’s my duty to take care of it back," she told the crowd, according to Variety.
Los Angeles County has continued to garner headlines after ICE immigration raids prompted multiple protests, which later prompted President Donald Trump to call in 4,000 California National Guard troops and 700 Marines to contain what he described as "violent, instigated riots."
Chappell Roan faced political pressure during the 2024 election
Roan faced political scrutiny from Democratic fans last year after she did not endorse former Vice President Kamala Harris ahead of the presidential election.
Criticism amplified in March when she slammed fans for expecting her to share her personal political opinions. "Are you looking to me for some political answer?" she said in a March 26 episode of the "Call Her Daddy" podcast. "I'm a pop star. I wish I had the answers, I wish the president was a pop star, but she's not."
Last year, Roan told Rolling Stone that she doesn’t "have a side because I hate both sides" and later told The Guardian she doesn't feel any pressure to endorse a presidential candidate.
"There's problems on both sides. I encourage people to use your critical thinking skills, use your vote – vote small, vote for what’s going on in your city," she said.
