The Federal Court has ordered mediation for former Liberal staffer Bruce Lehrmann over funding he says he was offered to pay for his lawyers.

Mr Lehrmann lodged the application in the Federal Court in September against the Special Minister of State and the Commissioner for the National Anti-Corruption Commission, Paul Brereton.

Mr Lehrmann says he was told at least twice during National Anti-Corruption Commission hearings that his legal representation would be funded, but so far his applications to secure the money have not been fruitful.

Mr Lehrmann told the court, "without funding I am not in a position to be represented".

Lawyers for the government said the application had been received, and was being processed.
