UNION COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Teachers in one of North Carolina's top school districts are still waiting on bonus money that county leaders say they should've had by now.
County commissioners say when they approved this year's budget for Union County Public Schools, there was an understanding with the district that part of it would go toward raising teacher bonuses by $1,000.
But that hasn't happened.
"I became very concerned when I learned the teachers had not gotten their increase because the Board of Education had communicated to us that it was their number one priority for this budget," said Melissa Merrell, the chair of the Board of Commissioners.
Rev. Jimmy H Bention Sr., the Board of Education chair, says there was no agreement that teachers would receive $1,000 specifi
