LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDBJ) - The Lynchburg City Council discussed a proposal that is part of a growing trend across Virginia using local zoning laws to take up the national abortion debate.

City leaders weighed in on new rules that could reshape where abortion clinics could operate, if one ever opens in the city.

The proposal, introduced by Councilman Martin Misjuns, would create a new definition for abortion clinics in city code. It would keep them at least one thousand feet away from churches, schools, libraries, parks, and daycares.

“That’s what this is about. About restricting where they could be located should they come to Lynchburg,” said Misjuns.

Misjuns says this proposal is a starting point, not a ban and that defining abortion clinics in city code is the first step in the process.
