In an Oct. 3 letter to the editor, mayoral candidate Roberto Torres claimed that the addition of market-rate housing is not the solution to Toledo’s housing problems. He is wrong.

Mr. Torres and I agree on one thing: Housing is too expensive. However, in his letter, he proposes building “affordable” housing by ditching the city’s Project Labor Agreement ordinance. Mr. Torres ditched Toledo for Canton, and then for Detroit, not unlike the way some of our former major employers have gone overseas in search of cheaper labor — which is exactly what he’s proposing. Toledo’s PLA ordinance ensures that Toledo workers share in the city’s success. For someone who wants to “keep profits in Toledo,” Mr. Torres is bent on making sure Toledo workers work for less and can’t share in those profits. In h
