Search efforts in Western Alaska following the weekend’s powerful coastal storm have now been suspended, authorities say.
The storm impacted at least 49 communities along the Bering Sea, forcing roughly 1,400 people from their homes. One adult woman has been found deceased in Kwigillingok, and two people remain unaccounted for in that community.
Alaska State Troopers, along with the U.S. Coast Guard, Alaska Army National Guard, and Alaska Air National Guard, coordinated search and rescue efforts by air and boat. Earlier, crews rescued at least 51 people and two dogs from Kipnuk and Kwigillingok.
