New powers by the Department for Work and Pensions to check claimants' bank accounts are taking the next step towards becoming legislation.

The Public Authorities (Fraud, Error and Recovery) Bill is currently passing through Parliament and will be scrutinised in the House of Lords on Wednesday, October 15. Members will discuss amendments relating to the recovery of wrongly claimed benefits from people's accounts.

The measures will initially focus on three benefits: Universal Credit , Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), and Pension Credit. The aim is to identify cases where someone's balance is higher than the permitted capital limit. Other benefits could also be included at a later stage.
