Three Newfoundlanders who were detained by Israeli officials while on a flotilla bound for Gaza returned to St. John’s yesterday afternoon.
Dozens of people greeted the trio – carrying flags, cowbells and signs and demanding an arms embargo and peace in the Middle East.
Sadie Mees, Devoney Ellis, and Nikita Stapleton were released from Israeli detention over the weekend and sent to Jordan on Sunday.
Mees says after the whole ordeal, they’re hoping to bring awareness to the conflict between Israel and Palestine.
“The reason we joined this project was to bring attention to Palestine,” says Mees. “We aren’t currently going to speak to our experiences in the prison. We just want people to pay attention to Palestine and what’s happening there right now.”
