MONTPELIER, Vt. —

Vermont Gov. Phil Scott is calling on a Republican state senator to resign after polarizing messages from a national group chat were leaked.

Politico first reported these leaked messages. According to that reporting, the messages allegedly originated in a young Republican leader group chat on the platform Telegram.

Screenshots posted by Politico revealed that several users in the group chat joked about gas chambers, slavery and rape.

Republican State Sen. Sam Douglass, who represents Orleans, is allegedly in that chat and contributed to conversations involving racial stereotypes.

In a statement about the leaked chat Gov. Scott called the messages hateful, disgusting and unacceptable. He went on to call for Republican leaders in the chat to resign, including State Sen
