Several hundred people gathered in Caras Park on Monday, Indigenous Peoples Day, for the Beartracks Celebration Powwow hosted by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes.
Martin Charlo, the secretary of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal Council, gave a speech to the crowd.
“One thing with this event that we have to remember is that, you know, our history is our history and it’s part of what makes us who we are,” he said. “But more importantly, it doesn’t define us. It doesn’t make us. You can’t hold on to it forever. We learn from it. We move on. Like a day like today, we show how resilient we are by coming out here and celebrating our connection with this place, our history with this land and hopefully our continued history down here.”
