WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - President Donald Trump has awarded the nation's highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, posthumously to Charlie Kirk on Tuesday.
The activist, who inspired a generation of young conservatives and helped push the nation's politics further to the right, was killed at a Utah university event last month during a Turning Point USA event. It was an organization Kirk founded.
Kirk's wife accepted the award on behalf of her late husband at the White House on what would have been his 32nd birthday. The day was also declared a National Day of Remembrance for him.
In the evening, students and community members gathered at Wichita State University to reflect on Kirk's legacy and dedication to debate.
