A 13-year-old boy from Brazil is being held in federal immigration custody after Everett, Massachusetts, police said officers detained him near his school last week. His lawyer said the child is now hundreds of miles away from home, in a detention center in Virginia.
Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria and Police Chief Paul Strong addressed the public after growing outrage from immigrant advocates calling for the boy's release. They said police received a tip Thursday that the teen was on his way to Parlin Junior High School carrying a weapon.
