Elections NL says nearly 192,000 votes were cast in yesterday’s election, compared to 178,632 in the 2021 election which was hampered by a surge in the spread of COVID-19 and resulting public health lockdown measures.

The turnout was down considerably from the 2019 provincial election in which 214,807 votes were cast.

The official count won’t be released until Friday, allowing Elections NL a better sense of whether or not any recounts will be triggered or requested.

The preliminary results in some districts, including Fogo Island – Cape Freels, Topsail-Paradise, Placentia West-Bellevue and Lewisporte-Twillingate were close, but whether recounts will be required or requested remain to be seen.
