Ahmedabad has been recommended as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games by the Commonwealth Sport Executive Board. This decision marks a significant step for India, as it aims to host the centenary edition of the Games after a gap of two decades. The final approval will be made during the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow on November 26.

The recommendation comes after a competitive bid process, where India faced off against Abuja, Nigeria. However, Commonwealth Sport has decided to support Nigeria's future hosting ambitions, including consideration for the 2034 Games. A press release stated, "The Executive Board of Commonwealth Sport has today confirmed that it will recommend Ahmedabad, India, as the proposed host city for the 2030 Centenary Commonwealth Games."

PT Usha, President of the Indian Olympic Association, expressed that hosting the Games would be an "extraordinary honour" for India. She highlighted that the event would showcase India's sporting capabilities and contribute to the nation's vision of 'Viksit Bharat 2047'. Usha stated, "We see the 2030 Games as a powerful opportunity to inspire our youth, strengthen international partnerships, and contribute to a shared future across the Commonwealth."

The Commonwealth Sport Evaluation Committee assessed the bids based on various criteria, including infrastructure and athlete experience. The committee found both Ahmedabad and Abuja's proposals compelling. Interim President of Commonwealth Sport, Dr. Donald Rukare, noted that the board was impressed with the vision presented by both cities but ultimately chose Ahmedabad for 2030.

Ahmedabad has recently hosted several international sporting events, including the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships. The city is upgrading its sports infrastructure, with the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave under construction, which will include facilities for various sports.

The 2030 Commonwealth Games are seen as a stepping stone for India’s aspirations to host the 2036 Olympics, also planned for Ahmedabad. An official from the Indian Olympic Association mentioned that the country aims to demonstrate its capability as a reliable host for major international events. The 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place in Glasgow, which has scaled down its event to manage costs, unlike the ambitious plans for the 2030 Games in India.
