SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) -- The Sangamon County Coroner's Office is investigating after a human skull was discovered in a Springfield creek last month.

The discovery was made on Sept. 20 but not reported to the media until Wednesday morning. Coroner Jim Allmon said in a brief news release that the skull was discovered near Winterberry Lane, in the Lake Pointe Apartments complex.

Allmon's office was called around 1 p.m. that day. He recovered the skull, processed it and had it examined by an anthropologist. The skull was then sent to the Illinois State Police for "possible DNA extraction."

The investigation is being performed by the Springfield Police Department and the Sangamon County Coroner's Office.
