Soccer history was made in Newfoundland and Labrador on the long weekend with not one, but two national senior championships – and on home turf to boot.

Holy Cross women defeated Quebec 2-1 to claim the Jubilee Trophy while Holy Cross men needed penalty kicks to prevail over Ontario in the Challenge Cup final.

Jake Stanford. the head coach for both teams, says the men and women believe they can compete with anyone on the field and that confidence has been reflected on the scoreboard.

It was the third national title for the women in four years and the first for the men since 1988.

Stanford isn’t sure if the accomplishment has fully sunk in yet. The women’s team won their first two Jubilee Trophies on the road, but there’s nothing like winning at home, he says.
