CHICAGO (WGN) — One person is in police custody after an ambulance was stolen and later recovered with a worker inside on the Tri-State Tollway on Tuesday.

The Niles Police Department said it was notified of a stolen vehicle just before 4 p.m. from the Portillo's Restaurant parking lot located in the 8800 block of West Dempster Street.

A male suspect went into an ambulance owned by a private ambulance transport service that was running with an employee of the ambulance service inside. The suspect got into the vehicle and drove the ambulance away from the Portillo's without consent, according to police.

Investigators said the ambulance service employee, who was in the back of the ambulance when it was stolen, called 911 to report the theft. Dispatchers were then able to determine the amb
