NEW YORK ― Angel Reese is practically done with glam. Her makeup looks so smooth, almost airbrushed, and it's no doubt a nod to the perfectionism the 23-year-old brings to both the court and now, the runway.
The WNBA superstar is cloaked in a pink and white robe, her hair in curlers, as she readies for her first-ever walk down the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show runway.
Reese, a forward for the Chicago Sky, will become the first pro athlete to get her "wings" as she models some of the lingerie house's stylings Oct. 15, joining the ranks of VS Angels like Gigi Hadid and Ashley Graham.
"I've seen the biggest stages before; this is a little different," Reese tells USA TODAY on Wednesday morning, sitting in front of a brightly lit vanity, ahead of the evening festivities. But it's not that she's nervous, "I'm really more excited and anxious to get out there," Reese says.
To prepare for her first catwalk, Reese worked with a walking coach to make sure she was runway-ready.
Reese adds she took cues from Tyra Banks, the first African American woman to grace the Victoria's Secret catalog in 1997. "One of the first shows I watched was Tyra Banks," she says.
"I love her … attitude, her confidence up there, and just being able to see her little small gestures was something I really watched," Reese adds. "You could tell she was confident; no matter what happened, she went out there, and she felt like she was that girl."
Now, Reese wants to emulate that when she's on the runway tonight. "In my head, I'm just going to continue to tell myself, 'You're that girl.'"
Of the opportunity to walk for the Victoria's Secret Show, which recently made a comeback after a multi-year hiatus, Reese says, "it means everything to me."
"I'm the first athlete to be able to be a VS Model," Reese says. "As a Black woman… representation is really important for me."
As for her post-show plans, they're fairly simple: "Feast."
"I'm going to eat a lot of food because I definitely changed my diet, not eating as much as I do as an athlete," she said. "As an athlete, you fuel up and for modeling, you fuel down. So I'm ready to eat."
She's also eager to watch the video of her walk back, already confident that it will be "going crazy on socials."
The excitement that beams from her eyes is reflective not of blind confidence but of hard work. "I'm going to look back at my video because I want to see my walk," she reveals. "I'm really looking forward to it."
"Just like basketball, I put in a lot of work," she says.
