WASHINGTON — A new Consumer Reports investigation has found that popular protein powders and shakes may contain troubling levels of toxic heavy metals like lead, cadmium and arsenic.

Many Americans often consume protein additives as part of their fitness plans, but the report suggests these additives shouldn’t be used every day.

In tests of 23 protein powders and ready-to-drink shakes from various brands, Consumer Reports found that more than two-thirds contained more lead in a single serving than what its food safety experts consider safe for a full day. In some cases, the amounts were more than 10 times higher than the recommended daily limit of 0.5 micrograms.
