An American tourist was fatally stabbed and another wounded during an attempted robbery in Portugal.

According to CNN Portugal , the incident occurred near the Church of the Navigators in the coastal town of Cascais, west of Lisbon, at 3:16 a.m. on Wednesday.

Investigators told CNN one of the tourists was returning to his hotel when three suspects confronted him and tried to rob him. The victims were attacked after they resisted.

The three suspects have been arrested, CNN reported, with one of the men facing a homicide charge.

The victim, who suffered deep stab wounds to vital areas, has not been identified by name and it is unclear where they are from. The second victim is in stable condition, CNN reported.
