NEWTON COUNTY, Texas — Testimony opened Tuesday in the trial of two people charged in connection with shooting Newton Police Chief Will Jackson while he was assisting in serving an eviction notice in January 2023.
Betty Jean Richards is charged with three counts of aggravated assault on a public servant.
L.C. Gosey Jr., of Call, faces one count of aggravated assault of a public servant in connection with the same incident.
According to court documents, Richards allegedly fired shots at Chief Jackson and other officers on January 14, 2023, at a house in the 3100 block of FM 1004 where both defendants lived.
One round struck Chief Jackson, penetrating his ballistic vest and striking the skin on his back.
