This opening instalment of our weekly Vancouver Canucks top-10 prospect power rankings wound up a photo finish, with positional preference deciding top spot.

With the idea that good teams are built from the defence out, we’re going with rearguard Tom Willander at No. 1, edging out centre Braeden Cootes.

We reserve the right to change our minds next week, and every week after that, for that matter.

Willander, 20, is the 2023 NHL Draft first rounder (No. 11 overall) who’s starting his pro career this season with the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks , while Cootes, 18, is the 2025 first rounder (No. 15 overall) that Vancouver just reassigned to the WHL’s Seattle Thunderbirds.
