Australians will flock together over the next week to make note of the amazing array of birdlife in our backyards and across our neighbourhoods.

The nation's largest citizen science project, BirdLife Australia's annual Aussie Bird Count, starts on October 20.

Ordinary Australians are encouraged to record the birds in their burbs - from the local footy field to favourite hiking tracks - and send the information to BirdLife.

BirdLife Australia ambassador and author of The Big Twitch, Sean 'Birdman' Dooley, said rural and regional areas presented some of the best opportunities.

"A lot of research is involved with well-studied threatened species that live in rural areas," Mr Dooley said.

"Whereas urban birds - or birds around farms and places where people live - they don't get the same
