KNOXVILLE, Tenn — Deputy Ray Faircloth was on his sixth Tennessee law enforcement job when he shot and killed the Morgan County man in May.

Faircloth, his attorneys say, rightfully killed John Cox, 28, because he was holding a rock. But that's not how a grand jury saw it, indicting Faircloth this spring for criminally negligent homicide and official misconduct.

Supervisors at at least two previous police agencies raised red flags about Faircloth, records obtained by WBIR show. One sheriff told him, Ray, you're a smart guy, but you don't belong in law enforcement.

Faircloth’s record was widely known in the East Tennessee law enforcement community, WBIR has found. Still, he kept getting hired.

Now Faircloth, 57, is facing trial in June in Morgan County.
