BRADENTON, Fla. — The inside of a boxing ring can be quite violent at times, but it’s where Fred “Jigg” Johnson feels his safest.

“I’ve been doing it for so many years, it’s become like a sanctuary,” Jigg said.

The former Palmetto High football player discovered boxing after his playing days ended. Boxing became his therapy, helping him through bouts of depression. Putting on a pair of gloves and throwing jabs and right and left hooks became his purpose.
