GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - A 19-year-old Grand Island woman lost $5,500 after being scammed while trying to sell household goods on a social media marketplace.

Grand Island police said the victim had been selling items on a social media market site when she was contacted by someone posing as a potential buyer.

The suspect deceived her into giving them a code that provided access to her bank account, according to police. The scammer then withdrew $5,500 from one account and attempted to access other accounts.

The victim’s bank was able to prevent additional unauthorized access attempts, police said.

The case remains under investigation by Grand Island police.
