LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- A new passenger rail and bus station has been proposed in Detroit, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced Tuesday.

Whitmer said the new transportation hub will help grow the economy and make downtown Detroit more vibrant.

Between the Michigan Department of Transportation, the City of Detroit and Michigan Central, the three parties will invest $40 million initially towards the hub that will be located in the 30-acre Michigan Central Innovation District.

"It builds on the historic investment in transit that we just made in the balanced, bipartisan budget I signed earlier this month," Whitmer said in a statement.
