Sydney is on track to beat heat records in October, with temperatures during the first half of the month matching high summer.

The city's average maximum temperature from October 1 to October 15 was about 27.2 degrees, Weatherzone has calculated , far above the long-term monthly average of 22.2 degrees.

The first half of the month is already the hottest on record, with four days above 30 degrees.

"One of the main reasons for Sydney's record-breaking hot start to October was an abundance of westerly and north-westerly winds," Weatherzone's Ben Domensino wrote.

"These offshore winds – meaning they blow from land to sea – have been carrying warm air from western NSW towards the coast over the past two weeks."
