More than five million road users are under threat of being hit with a £10,000 fine for breaking a simple rule this October.

According to new research from Confused.com, one in 8 UK motorists admit to never checking their tyre tread, despite the major safety risks, reports Express.co.uk.

Even 11% of UK drivers admit to knowingly getting behind the wheel of vehicles with bald or seriously-worn tyres - but have been warned 'checking your tyres should be something you do regularly'.

The survey discovered that just 7% check them ahead of their MOT test in a desperate bid to pass the annual exam.
