MILLINGTON, Tenn. — The City of Millington is threatening to take legal action against the Shelby County Clerk's office if it doesn't receive nearly $40,000 in past-due rent by Friday.

But County Clerk Wanda Halbert says her office doesn't owe any rent and doesn't intend to pay any, contending that she has no lease agreement with the City of Millington.

A letter obtained by WREG that was dated Oct. 3 states that the city will be forced to "enforce the terms of its lease" with Clerk's Wanda Halbert's office if it does not receive payment in 14 days. Officials have confirmed the information in the letter.

The county commission approved a lease for office space in Millington to house a branch of the county clerk's office, at $1,600 per month in 2024 and $2,000 a month in 2025, according to
