Born in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, on October 15, 1931, Dr Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam earned the title of the ‘Missile Man of India’ for his instrumental role in developing India's missile and nuclear weapons programs.

The day honours not only his achievements in science and public service, but also his lifelong dedication to motivating and guiding students. He would often say, “If the people remember me as a good teacher, that will be the biggest honour for me.”
