New estimates from Kelley Blue Book show Americans paid $50,080 on average for a new car in September.

It's the first time ever that the average cost exceeded $50,000.

KBB says as the 2026 model year product arrives on dealer lots, the average new-vehicle manufacturer's suggested retail price also reached a new record-high in September of $52,183.

The MSRP last month was higher by 4.2% year over year.

Last month, there were more than 60 models with prices above $75,000

KBB says the increase was largely due to higher-priced EV models, luxury models and increased costs due to tariffs.
